Alternative Data Vendor Certification Methodology

The Vedex Vendor Certification Program independently evaluates alternative data providers across six weighted pillars: documentation completeness, methodology transparency, academic backing, historical depth, compliance readiness, and delivery reliability. Each vendor receives a composite score from 0 to 100 that determines its tier placement. The framework is designed for institutional data buyers who require objective, repeatable quality benchmarks before committing to licensing agreements.

Why Certification Matters for Data Procurement

Alternative data procurement teams face a growing universe of vendors with inconsistent quality standards. Vedex certification reduces evaluation overhead by pre-scoring providers on the dimensions that matter most to quant funds, asset managers, and corporate strategy teams. Gold-tier vendors have demonstrated excellence across all six pillars, while lower tiers highlight specific areas where additional due diligence is warranted.

Scoring Transparency and Update Cadence

Certification scores are recalculated quarterly using a combination of vendor-submitted documentation, independent audits, and user-reported delivery metrics. Weight allocations reflect institutional buyer priorities gathered from annual surveys of over 200 data procurement professionals. All scoring criteria and pillar definitions are published openly to ensure vendors can improve their standing through measurable actions rather than opaque editorial decisions.

Tier Thresholds and Vendor Distribution

Vendors scoring 75 or above earn Gold certification, 55-74 receive Silver, 35-54 achieve Bronze, and those below 35 remain Uncertified. The current distribution across 115 evaluated vendors shows 12 Gold, 34 Silver, 28 Bronze, and 41 Uncertified providers. This distribution reflects the maturity gap in the alternative data industry, where a small cohort of established vendors leads on transparency and compliance while a long tail of newer entrants has room for improvement.
